A ‘San Andreas’ Sequel Has Been Given the Green Light

San Andreas, New Line Cinema

A sequel to 2015’s San Andreas, the disaster movie starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has been ordered by New Line Cinema. The film looks to stay true to its roots, focusing on the Ring of Fire, a span of volcanoes and fault lines that circle the Pacific Ocean, stating that the production will be ‘going global’.

With all the hype about superhero movies during 2015, it was hard to focus on some of the other successful films from that same year. San Andreas was a successful film last year. Neil Widener and Gavin James have been hired to write the script (original writers Andrew Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore are working on Astro Boy), and the film looks to assemble much of the team that worked on the first one. San Andreas grossed over $473 M worldwide in 2015.

Brad Peyton will be directing the sequel, with Beau Flynn producing. Other confirmed returning cast are actors Dwayne Johnson, Paul Giamatti, Carla Gugino, and Alexandra Daddario, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In San Andreas, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is a rescue helicopter pilot who enlists the help of his ex-wife to rescue their daughter when devastating earthquakes hit California. The film finishes with a nice Hollywood happy ending. This gives the screen writers plenty of room to move forward with a sequel. The only hit that a potential sequel would encounter is the character conflict/tensions between The Rock and his movie wife were resolved in the first film. Unless there is an off-screen dynamic change, just like the Taken trilogy did, then the movie will have to continue without this.

Boasting copious amounts of destruction, there is no question that San Andreas 2 will up the ante. How the sequel will manage this remains to be seen, but it will be the right amount of disaster porn to satisfy disaster genre fans of all ages.
