The biggest question mark surrounding the upcoming David Ayer movie Suicide Squad is how well Jared Leto will be received as The Joker, and will his performance satisfy fans of the character. It is a tough act to follow considering the last actor to take on the role, Heath Ledger, won an Oscar. According to Will Smith, Jared Leto kicked off the filming of Suicide Squad in true Joker style.
There have been reports from the set that Jared Leto’s method acting capabilities shined as the Joker in Suicide Squad. Reports like this come out from time to time about actors who go above-and-beyond to fully realize their role, but how much of this is hyping a film or an actor’s performance, and how much of this has truth to it. I am not questioning Leto’s abilities to act, rather the extent that a studio will go to hype up a film.
We saw a bit of this with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman. The film was almost over-hyped in the lead up to the release date, and then the film had a lack-luster reception with viewers. Now we have a great example of what Leto did to ‘become’ The Joker. In an interview with MTV News, Smith talks about his first interaction with the Clown Prince:
“What he did that’s great is he set the bar. First, we found out that Jared wasn’t going to be in rehearsal, so we were like “aww that’s messed up you know, how he gonna not be in rehearsal.” and then there was a bang on the door, and you know we’re like who is, and this dude barges in and throws a dead pig down on the floor in front of us, and we’re like oh shoot, and he said that’s from Mister J.”
But The Joker’s henchman wasn’t finished, he then motioned toward’s Margot Robbie:
“And then he hands Margot a box with black roses wrapped in black, and she opens it and there’s a live rat in the box. We’re like okay, so Jared has officially set off the Suicide Squad. The game is on. He just went full Joker. He went full Joker (laughs).”
Whether or not Leto will be a great Joker or not, this is surely the right way to kick off things. According to the cast, Leto is an amazing Joker.
We will see when Suicide Squad opens on August 5th.
