Han Solo Shot First, According to Greedo

Star Wars A New Hope, Lucasfilm

One of the hottest debates among Star Wars fans is whether Han Solo shot first in the Cantina on Tatooine. This is a debate that waged for decades before George Lucas tried to solve the riddle himself  when he rereleased the original trilogy in theaters in the 1990s. It was George’s decision that spurned the wrath of Star Wars fans worldwide.

So, what did Lucas do cause such a debacle? He altered the famous Cantina scene, making Greedo shoot at Han first. Why would he do this? Was he attempting to make the Smuggler more hero-like? There really is no telling what he was thinking gat the time, but one thing is known for sure, the change did not sit well with fans. The change was not done well. The CGI was shoddy at best. Most fans felt betrayed by the man who created the universe they love.

Fans have cried for the scene to be put back to its original form, along with actors in the saga, and even John Boyega, a newer actor to Star Wars. Recently, an original script for the scene has surfaced that reinforces the fact that it was Han that shot first, not Greedo.

Talking with the New York Daily News about Elstree 1976, Paul Blake, the man behind the Greedo mask, has said that the change upset him as well. He states that the change made Greedo seem inept as a bounty hunter:

“He was a bit inept wasn’t he? He’s a worse shot than a Stormtrooper. I don’t think Jabba had him under a pension plan, let’s put it that way. It would be lovely to see them go back to the original version, I much preferred it, I must say. And it does give it Greedo a little more glory if he’s just blown away.”

There has been no sign whether Disney will be changing the theatrical cuts back to their original form, but there is enough outcry for the change. Let’s hope that they go ahead and put things back the way they were originally intended to be.
