Marvel fans can celebrate, Captain America: Civil War has officially passed $1 billion worldwide. This is only the first major hurdle Marvel has to jump in the next phase. While there were a lot of characters in Civil War, it doesn’t come close to the number of heroes that will appear in Infinity War.
Filming on Infinity War begins in November, and scribes are trying to solidify the script. In a discussion with CinemaBlend, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely say that although they have turned in a second draft of the script, it is far from complete. There are a ton of films that can affect the script of Infinity War, before the release date. Marvel has a large number of films releasing before the big showdown with Thanos takes place: Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther all hit theaters before Infinity War. Each of these films potentially have the power to alter the last script. According to McFeely:
“Some of it is informed guesswork. Some of it is constantly pestering people who are making those [other] movies to tell us what they’re doing. And sometimes it is us going, ‘It would be massively beneficial if this person could be in this place at the end of your movie. I don’t care what he does in your movie, but by the end of it…”
Markus goes on that although they are ahead of the game with the script, they don’t expect to finish anytime soon:
“And you know, we write it, we assume when we write it and rewrite it and rewrite it, as more information comes in, we will be adjusting. When we’re turning in the first draft, it’s absolutely that, a first draft, and we’ll go through a lot before we get to November.”
Infinity War has theatrical release dates of May 2018 and 2019.
