‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ to Possibly Explore Dumbledore’s Sexuality

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Warner Bros. Pictures

Dumbledore is a beloved character of the Harry Potter franchise. He served as a mentor, Headmaster, friend, and father-figure to Harry during his time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As we followed Harry’s life as he faced-off against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, we couldn’t help but become enamored with his Headmaster as well.

With the recent announcement by J.K. Rowling that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was to be a five-film franchise, we are left wondering what reflections of Harry Potter could make it into the tale. Shortly after this announcement was made, news came that the production was looking to cast a young Dumbledore. If you were a fan of the books, then you know that Dumbledore was a close friend to Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), the big bad of this franchise.

In an interview in 2007, J.K. Rowling stated that Dumbledore was gay and had strong feeling for Grindelwald. There was no mention of this in the books or the films, so naturally, there are some wondering if Dumbledore’s sexuality will make it into the films.

Does this mean that this relationship will become canon in the Harry Potter Universe? In a recent interview with Variety, Rowling says that their relationship could make it into the films, because she is penning the scripts:

“I can’t tell you everything I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story, so there’s lots to unpack in that relationship. I will say that you will see Dumbeldore as a younger man and quite a troubled man because he wasn’t always the sage [mentor]. He was always very clever, but we’ll see him at what I think was the formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned, watch this space.”

Rowling has already finished the script for the second film, and is set to write the other three. Director David Yates said that Grindelwald will be “a much more prominent part of the stories going forward”. The assault will be worldwide as the series plays out. The second film will take the action to London and Paris.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 will hit theaters in 2018.
