Two of the biggest superhero films of the past few years are Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy. In Deadpool, Reynold plays a witty assassin with a silver tongue who gains superhero powers. Guardians of the Galaxy see Chris Pratt lead Marvel’s reg-tag team of misfits in the film of the same name. Reynold gave a brief statement on the departure of the director Tim Miller from Deadpool 2. Also, according to writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, both films capitalized on characters swapped in a Marvel/Fox deal.
In a new interview GQ, Ryan Reynolds spoke about the departure of Tim Miller from Deadpool 2, and gave a really interesting tidbit of information about a Fox-Marvel deal that helped two big movies gain characters.
In regards to Miller departing Deadpool 2, Reynolds said, “All I can really add is that I’m sad to see him off the film. Tim’s brilliant and nobody worked harder on Deadpool than he did.” This statement comes o the heels of news that states that Miller left the project due to creative differences with Reynolds.
In the deal Marvel agreed to give Reynolds and Deadpool the mutant character Teenage Negasonic Warhead, in exchange for Ego the Living Planet. Negasonic Teenage Warhead ended up being the X-Men rookie (and partner of Colossus), who assisted the Merc with a Mouth on his climax fight with Francis. Ego will star in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 next summer, and the film cast Kurt Russell as Ego. In a Q&A this past weekend, the writers talked about the unlikely deal:
“We were looking down the list of the 400 [‘X-Men’] characters that Fox owns, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead jumped out and we were like, ‘yes’. I don’t care what her powers are. She’s gonna be in the movie.’…Kurt Russell’s Ego the Living Planet in the new ‘Guardians’ movie was the character that Fox swapped with Marvel to [change] Negasonic Teenage Warhead powers.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters next summer, and Deadpool 2 is shooting for a Summer 2018 release date.[ComicBook.com]
