My favorite film from 2014 was Kingsman: The Secret Service. It was a sleeper hit, adapted from the R-rated comic book, and instantly launched the career of Taron Egerton. The violent film chronicled the life of a young recruit as he attempted to join an elite, independent spy organization.
The sequel will hit theaters next year, with Matthew Vaughn at the helm, and looks to up-the-ante from the groundwork laid by the first film. Vaughn said that he would only return for the sequel if the script was worthy, and as he is attached to the film, Kingsman 2 should shock and wow everyone.
In an interview with Collider, Egerton talks about Vaughn’s stance after the first film, and how this is a story worth telling:
“I remember when we finished the first one I was like, ‘This is a franchise right?’ and [Vaughn] said, ‘Well it depends on the first one. I’m not doing it unless the script is right.’ And he went away and him and Jane Goldman, his writing partner, wrote a really bloody good script. That’s always the most important thing; good director, good script, you’re on your way. It was hard, it was a tough shoot, it always is on that thing, but I think it’s gonna be amazing.”
Although Vaughn recently spoke about the film, Egerton says that he can’t say much, other than how different this film will be:
“It is f—– mental, but it’s what people like and it’s what Matthew is good at. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s awesome… It is bigger and it feels more ambitious, really. There are more characters, the world is explored in more detail. This weird version of reality where these spies exist is kind of explored more. I know Matthew’s announced a lot about the fact that we discover a sister organization based in America called the Statesman. They’re richer than us, they’ve got cool shit.”
Kingsman 2 stars Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry and Elton John.
