‘The Batman’ Won’t Arrive in 2018, and Ben Affleck Finishes Rehab

Justice League, Warner Bros.

Recently, Ben Affleck announced that he would be stepping down as the director of the next Batman film for DC. This raised many questions about who would direct the film, and whether the film was about to be shelved for the time being. We know that is not the case, it was recently announced that Matt Reeves has come over the fill the void. This means that the film’s previously announced Spring production start date will get pushed back.

According to Variety writer Justin Kroll, With Matt Reeves previous involvement with the Planets of the Apes franchise will delay this date for a bit. The delay has not been officially announced, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t coming. His statement was brief, but very telling:

“Hearing Matt Reeves contracted to work on APES till at least end of June, so production on BATMAN likely not starting till 2018.”

The word is that preliminary production (such as casting) will not begin until July at the earliest.

In related news, Ben Affleck (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) took to Facebook to announce that he has just finished a stint in the chronic relapse treatment facility for alcohol addiction. Affleck says that he did it for his family, and wants to work to remain in recovery. In another bit of news, a source tells EW that the rehab “didn’t affect his involvement in The Batman“, and script rewrites are still being done.

You can read Affleck’s full announcement below:

“I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I’ve dealt with in the past and will continue to confront. I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step.

I’m lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I’ve done the work I set out to do. This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.”

Affleck’s next role will be in Justice League hitting theaters in November.
