Second ‘G.I. Joe’ Sequel Ditched for an All-New, More-Modern Reboot

G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Hasbro

When G.I. Joe: Retaliation hit theaters in 2013, it seemed that the franchise finally had stable ground to begin building a decent franchise. The film made some great casting choices, and the plot wasn’t all that bad. The movie took a more Fast and the Furious approach, and not being serious, gritty, dark, or sci-fi. (Why in the hell did the first movie go sci-fi? That is something I will never know.) It was a fun popcorn movie.

Armed with the latest in military and spy technology, the team of elite soldiers known as G.I. Joe travel around the globe to wherever their services are needed. In their latest assignment Gen. Hawk (Dennis Quaid), Duke (Channing Tatum) and the rest of the G.I. Joe team take on Destro (Christopher Eccleston), a corrupt arms dealer, and fight the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization.

This wasn’t enough for a franchise that just lost its lead actor Channing Tatum. Hasbro is now setting their sights on rebooting the entire franchise, and aiming at a more-modern setting and audience. According to Hasbro’s Simon Waters:

(We want to take) a more millennial approach. The world has changed, and I think you’re going to see G.I. Joe changing with it. There’s going to be a much more contemporary approach to the whole franchise, and that will allow us to develop different characters.

There is no word yet whether there is room for Dwayne Johnson in the sequel, but the franchise will more-than-likely replace all the characters from the first films. Does this mean that we will get a younger set of G.I. Joe’s? Will the franchise go a bit darker in the new movies? We will have to wait to find out.
