Sony Pictures Casts Tom Hardy As Venom In Spider-Man Spin-off

Sony Pictures announced that they would be releasing an R-Rated Venom movie on October 5th of next year. After all: Venom will mark the third live-action Spider-Man universe established by Sony in the past five years. However, even more surprising is who they just announced will be taking on the lead role. It’s none other than Tom Hardy.

It appears that playing the venom-fueled Bane in The Dark Knight Rises wasn’t enough for Hardy. He needed to play Venom himself.

This is an interesting choice. Hardy was set to appear in DC’s Suicide Squad as Rick Flagg last year, before jumping ship when things went haywire. After that, people were speculating that Hardy might be the next actor to put on the adamantium claws of Wolverine. So, him taking on this role came out of left field. Though, Tom Hardy is an excellent actor, so we’ll have to wait and see what he has.

Let’s pray to the spider-gods that it’s not Spider-Man 3 all over again…

According to a report by The Hollywood ReporterVenom is a top priority for Sony Pictures after Marvel took over Spider-Man duties. Sony is eyeing a 2018 release date for Symbiote’s first stand-alone film.

Venom is to usher in a host of movies from Sony’s Marvel and Spider-Man-based universe of characters. Sony is rebooting its Marvel-based slate with this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Venom is a key title in its slate.”

Venom will not be a joint production with Marvel Studios, rather Sony Pictures will head this film up entirely on their own. Tom Hardy will appear in the Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk on July 21. Venom will be directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer, and written by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.
