If the early reviews and box office numbers are any indication, Wonder Woman is set to be a hit. Critics are raving about the film, but one scene stands out above all others in the movie – Diana’s walk into No Man’s Land. This was a scene that almost was left on the cutting room floor.
It is a scene that stands above the others, because it is a big moment for Diana. She’s seen too much suffering, and this is the moment she decides to make a stand. This is her big superhero moment, and it is important symbolically and thematically. The scene is one that is much talked about, and represents the core values of Diana.
According to Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, she had to fight to keep the scene in the film. with a scene this big, what was the problem? Jenkins says that it didn’t put Diana up against a villain. She tells Fandango:
“It’s my favorite scene in the movie and it’s the most important scene in the movie. It’s also the scene that made the least sense to other people going in, which is why it’s a wonderful victory for me.
I think that in superhero movies, they fight other people, they fight villains. So when I started to really hunker in on the significance of No Man’s Land, there were a couple [of] people who were deeply confused, wondering, ‘Well, what is she going to do? How many bullets can she fight?’ And I kept saying, ‘It’s not about that. This is a different scene than that. This is a scene about her becoming Wonder Woman.’”
The scene and the film are brilliant. It is a must-watch in theaters, as this movie will be the big turning point for DC movies, both in their construction, and their focus.
