It seems that everyone wants to have a shared cinematic universe lately. Following this trend, is game developer Gearbox Software. They are setting up two of their properties to have a shared cinematic universe. Whether this will be successful is anybody’s guess, but it is an interesting idea. Gearbox is looking to put their live-action adaptations of Borderlands and Duke Nukem in the same cinematic universe.
Check out the announcement below from E3:
We’ve been developing scripts and the strategy that we’re on right now is, that it’s obviously all in the Borderlands universe, but rather than retell the stories that were in the game, we’ll create new stories so the films will have their own film canon. We’ll use all the characters and scenarios, it’s similar to what Marvel is doing. You can’t read any particular film plot in a comic book but there’s a lot of the characters, themes, and, in fact, some of the situations are represented. […]
We’re working on [Duke Nukem]! I can’t announce it but it’s blown my mind, there’s been a lot of production companies that have come at us. We’re putting together a deal right now with a major motion picture studio; I’ll tell you off the record if you want to know. It’s the exact right people who should be doing a Duke Nukem film and we’ll see what happens. It’s unbelievable, I think that’s very likely to be a thing.
You can see the interview from the convention below as well:
Here is the synopsis for both games:
Borderlands is set on the planet of Pandora. Prior to the events of the game, one of the other mega-corporations, the Atlas Corporation, found an ancient vault on nearby planet Prometheus, filled with advanced alien weapons technology that allowed them to rapidly overtake their competitors.Duke Nukem takes place in the in the early 21st century, The city of Los Angeles has been taken over by murderous aliens and the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) has mutated. The streets of L.A. has become an infestation zone. Only one man can take out the trash and that man is the man who loves to kick ass and chew bubblegum… Returning to Earth and armed with an arsenal of weaponry, blonde action hero Duke Nukem takes on the murderous aliens and the mutant Los Angeles police officers in a spectacular ultra-violent showdown, from the red light district to the football stadium, Duke is the only man who can save the earth and stop the murderous aliens who need exterminating.
