‘Star Wars’: Director Ron Howard Takes Over the ‘Han Solo’ Movie After Lord and Miller Depart

Director Ron Howard

A few days ago, it was reported that filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from the untitled Star Wars standalone film about Han Solo. Lucasfilm wasted no time replacing the duo with a home run. Director Ron Howard (Apollo 13A Beautiful Mind) will take the directors chair in the Han Solo movie. The big question is whether we will see Howard’s famous narrator show up in the Star Wars universe.

The Da Vinci Code director is taking over a film that was three-quarters of the way through principal photography. It only had 3 weeks left of filming. The announcement comes via THR and the official statement was originally posted to StarWars.Com.

For the last two years, Lord and Miller were attached to the project.  They departed the film with four-and-a-half months of shooting already completed. According to the duo, the creative dispute was between the two of them, and Lawrence Kasdan and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy over the style and tone of the new film. The late departure n=has Hollywood reeling, wondering if the film could be in trouble. Howard recently met with the cast to calm everyone’s nerves, and to go over a rough edit of the film to see where he needs to begin.

Howard is the safe choice for Lucasfilm. Actually, bringing on a seasoned director is a smart choice all-around. He will be more than equipped for the pressures of a short shooting window and lack of familiarity with the script. This may mean that the film could see a delayed release, depending on Howard’s ability to complete the film. In a recent statement, Kathleen Kennedy said:

“We’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

The movie is shooting for a May 25, 2018 release date.
