According to director Chris Columbus, the script for Gremlins 3 is finished. The script is dark, and takes the franchise into uncharted territory. The film will no longer be a reboot of the franchise, but with Columbus’ retooling, a direct sequel to Gremlins 2.
Columbus commented on the script while out doing press rounds for his latest film Patti Cake$. In an interview with Slashfilm, Columbus says:
“I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”
Gremlins 3 was originally written by Carl Ellsworth (Red Dawn, Disturbia). According to Columbus, fans shouldn’t worry about the look of the gremlins and Gizmo, the will still be puppets in the 3rd film:
“Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier.”
Fan theorist have long asked the Mogwai weren’t targeted because they birth the gremlins? According to Columbus, Gremlins 3 will address that:
“That comes up in the movie, certainly… I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you. Too many people are dying.”
Columbus is not directing the film, but will produce the film alongside of the original film’s executive producer, Steven Spielberg.
