Director Ryan Johnson recently spoke about the troubles that come with having to write something as monumental as the opening crawl for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It is one of the most important parts of the film, and something that Star Wars fans have grown accustomed to.

Seldom do we hear about just how much thought and rewriting goes into this small detail of the film. In recent reports, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be something of a new turn in the SW lore. The tale will be darker and newer than any other film in the series has felt. Johnson looks to expand the universe, by giving fans an immersion into the world of Star WarsIn a recent interview with LA Times, Johnson hints that one word from the new crawl is”decimated”:

That was petri… Actually, you know, I just did it. I just started writing the draft. I wrote something, and it was terrible. And then I was watching one of the behind-the-scenes things and Lucas said, ‘It’s like writing a haiku.’

I realized as I was refining it what he meant. We didn’t finish the opening crawl and totally lock it until a few weeks ago actually. Because you’re like, ‘Do we need this word, do we need that word, what if we shift.’ It’s like a poem, there’s very little room for error in trying to get it just right. Which is awesome, it’s really fun.

It would be funny if it was ‘poop’. Which is a first for the ‘Star Wars’ universe. That’s the whole crawl, just the word ‘poop.’

I am with Johnson. The crawl should be just the word ‘Poop’, it would make for a rather interesting surprise.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
