How does a movie fail at the box office? There are many reasons that a film can fail, but sometimes a failed film leaves everyone in disbelief. This is the case with the Billionaire Boys Club.
The film has a hot cast, with Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) and Taron Egerton (Kingsman) leading and Emma Roberts, Jeremy Irvine, Billie Lourd, Cary Elwes and Judd Nelson in supporting roles. So what happened?
According to THR Billionaire Boys Club is a big flop at the box office. The indie flick opened Friday in eight theaters across select states in the U.S. and is tracking towards a $500 opening weekend. That is not a typo, the film might only make $500, which equates to a $63 per-screen average.
This would mean that only 7 people walked in each theater to view the film.
The Billionaire Boys Club has been available for weeks on premium VOD services. With the recent bad publicity that brought major negative headlines to Kevin Spacey, it’s easy to begin to point the finger. The bad outing could even be a combination of a number of things.
Either way, it is not good for a cast who rarely sees failure.
Check out the synopsis for the film below:
Young. Handsome. And cunning. Based on the incredible true story of a group of wealthy boys from LA in the 80’s, who established a get-rich-quick scam that turns deadly. The Billionaire Boys Club follows the real-life club of the same name that graced Southern California in the 1980s.
Spacey portrays Beverly Hills playboy Ron Levin, but are Spacey’s sexual abuse allegation to blame for the failing theatrical release? Some critics cite that the film is plagued with bland stereotypes under the guise of a wornout Wolf of Wall Street clone.
Maybe this is actually the reason why BBC is tanking.
