Now that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has hit Bluray, fans have had time to watch the film 20 times and pic apart ever mosel there for your eyes to feast on. There are a lot of great things that you can say that this movie did well. Abrams recently said that The Force Awakens was supposed to resemble the original trilogy a bit, to welcome fans back to a franchise that they love. Could this have worked any other way? It probably would, but giving the franchise a soft reboot before moving forward was genius. Fans were not happy after seeing the prequels. They needed to be reassured that everything would be alright.
The soft reboot also ushered in the new characters in a way that felt familiar, and fans embraced them immediately. The new characters are one of the better things about the film. But this was something that almost didn’t happen. During production, Harrison Ford was injured when one of the Millennium Falcon’s doors fell on his ankle crushing it. This set production back weeks, while everyone awaited the results of Ford’s injury. J.J. Abrams recent said that it was during these two weeks that he reflected on the dynamic between two of the film’s biggest characters, Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley). Abrams felt that there chemistry wasn’t working well. In an interview with IGN, Abrams discussed what happened:
“When I was on the set of the Millennium Falcon and we started to do work with Rey and Finn, the first time we did it, it didn’t work at all,” Abrams said at the Tribeca Film Festival. “It was much more contentious. I didn’t direct it right. It was set up all wrong, and when Harrison Ford got injured—which was a very scary day—we ended up having a few weeks off, and it was during that time that I really got to look at what we had done and rewrite a bit of that relationship. So when we came back to work again, we actually just reshot from the ground up, those scenes. It was an amazingly helpful thing to get these two characters to where they needed to be.”
The finished relationship between the two characters is great, and it felt as if they truly fit in the Star Wars universe. This is the best possible outcome for the movie, and for a franchise that needed to redefine itself. If you haven’t seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens yet, you should, it will not disappoint you.
