Can ‘Suicide Squad 2’ Fix the Problems the First Film Created?

Some rumors say that Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam could be fighting the Suicide Squad in the sequel providing the franchise with its second magical villain.

After the lackluster reception to Enchantress, using Black Adam as the main antagonist could backfire and leave audiences fatigued.

Another rumor suggests Joe Magniello’s Deathstroke, who debuted in Justice League, will be the main antagonist for the sequel. Deathstroke makes more sense than adding another magical user. He would prove a challenge for the Taskforce without powers.

If the creative team want another magical villain then Black Adam should be a secondary adversary. Perhaps Amanda Waller wants Black Adam for her Taskforce while Deathstroke is acquiring an ally for the Legion of Doom.

One thing is certain, the sequel needs to show the villains as villains. They need to be ruthless and not wasting time in a bar talking about their feelings.

An R-rated Suicide Squad would let the writers and director better express the darker side of the villains. If it worked for Wolverine and Deadpool it can work for a movie centered on villains of the DC Universe.

The two animated Suicide Squad movies (Assault on Arkham & Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay) never shied away from the darker and more cerebral version of the team.

If the movies want success they should follow the animated film’s lead. Suicide Squad 2 is rumored to release either 2019 or 2020 along with SHAZAMWonder Woman 2 and the Harley Quinn-lead Birds of Prey.
