It is no secret that Christopher Eccleston was unhappy with how the BBC handled his departure from the Doctor Who. Eccleston is a thespian known for his honesty regarding roles and situations that occur on set. His honesty is brutal and blunt more times than not. In a recent interview, Eccleston talks about how much disdain he has for a few of his recent roles, including how much he hates Doctor Who.
In a recent piece for The Guardian, Christopher Eccleston talks about the last few roles he took for money, stating he has not one ounce of love for them. Two roles that garner the majority of his hatred are as the villain Destro in G.I. Joe and as Malekith in Thor: The Dark World. Both of these films are considered bad, and Thor 2 is considered one of the worst in the MCU. This is what Eccleston had to say:
“Working on something like GI Joe was horrendous. I just wanted to cut my throat every day. And Thor? Just a gun in your mouth. Gone in 60 Seconds was a good experience. Nic Cage is a gentleman and fantastic actor. But GI Joe and Thor were… I really paid for being a whore those times.”
Eccleston also took a moment to speak about his time with Doctor Who, and although he loved the part, he hated the politics and the work schedule that came with the role:
“What happened around Doctor Who almost destroyed my career. I gave them a hit show and I left with dignity and then they put me on a blacklist. I was carrying my own insecurities as it was something I had never done before and then I was abandoned, vilified in the tabloid press and blacklisted. I was told by my agent at the time: ‘The BBC regime is against you. You’re going to have to get out of the country and wait for regime change.’ So I went away to America and I kept on working because that’s what my parents instilled in me.”
It is a shame that there is so much bad blood between Eccleston and the BBC, because it would be nice to see his Doctor show up in Doctor Who again. Eccleston is currently working on a new version of Macbeth for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
