The events of Captain America: Civil War sent ripples throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. New alliances were formed, and old friends became enemies. But what effects did they have on Marvel’s television universe? Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has already mentioned the Sokovia Accords, but what other damage has Civil War done? According to Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson)via Entertainment Weekly, the Sokovia Accords are extremely relevant to the Inhumans in S.H.I.E.L.D.:
“The Sokovia Accords have their own specific purpose within Civil War having to do with the powered people that we’ve met in The Avengers,” Clark Gregg tells EW. “It’s representative of how our show functions within the Marvel Universe, in some ways, in that it’s all connected.” (Side note: Everybody drink!) “That ripples through our show because suddenly all these people who are Inhumans in our corner of the universe, they’re all subjected to the Sokovia Accords. That dilemma rises up in our show about the people who feel Inhumans should be registered and those who feel that’s a first step to them being sequestered, imprisoned, exterminated.”
In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gregg talks about what Coulson’s demotion will do to the show, and who might become the new director:
Since it’s clear that Coulson is Team Cap, Jed [Whedon] and Maurissa [Tancharoen] have fiendishly put Coulson on the spot, because Hive [Brett Dalton] turned out to be the living embodiment of all the reasons why you would be afraid of Inhumans. He was the greatest argument that the people who support the Sokovia Accords could ever have for locking them all up. Coulson had to ride the line where he was trying to respect these new iterations of humanity as friends and allies, and at the same time stop Hive at all costs.
I don’t know that it’s been determined [about the new director]. I thought I was going to find out when I saw Civil War, but it’s not at all clear. It all depends when the glorious Nick Fury [Samuel L. Jackson] returns from the cold and the shadows. I suspect, in the wake of the Sokovia Accords and the end of Civil War, the people involved in choosing who the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be are other than in-house S.H.I.E.L.D. people. If I know my government bureaucracies, I have a feeling it will be someone somewhat less qualified than Coulson to run S.H.I.E.L.D.
