Wednesday is new comic book day, and this week brings some big hitters. It’s never easy to pick out what comics are worth picking up, so here are some recommendations to help you out.
Defenders #1
written by Brian Michael Bendis & and drawn by David Marquez
The Netflix Defenders series is set to drop in August, and this new comic book is going to be the perfect way to get ready for it. Defenders #1 is going to be the first glance at the team-up of Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Iron Fist. These heroes have been around the Marvel universe for years, and now a lethal foe from the past is making moves in the criminal underworld. These four heroes will need to learn to work together once again and become the Marvel universe’s latest Defenders. Brian Michael Bendis is known for bringing heroes like Cage, Jones and Daredevil to the forefront for years now, and this is another chance for him to highlight these street-level champions.
Dark Days: The Forge #1
written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Jim Lee
Headlined by all star creator Scott Snyder, Dark Days is the start of an epic comic book story that will rock the DC Multiverse. The entire library of DC’s heroes are coming to Batman because they believe he has been keeping a secret from everyone else. This is going to be the next massive comic book event of the summer. Writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV have steered the ship for the Bat-family for months, and are now put in charge of the story for the most epic Batman story told thus far. We’ll get to see artwork from superstars like Jim Lee, Andy Kubert and John Romita Jr. in this comic book run.
Detective Comics #958
written by James Tynion IV and drawn by Raul Fernandez
James Tynion IV has been killing it lately, bringing a new life to the Bat-family and focusing on everyone. This story line set up the next arc called ‘Intelligence’, and it’s apparently all about Azrael. Jean-Paul Valley has not seen the spotlight in awhile, but this latest run of Detective Comics has been all about every member of the Batman team getting some attention and showing off how cool each one of them can be. Jame Tynion IV is a relatively new voice in the comics industry, but he has shown that he really knows how to tell great character driven stories that are a lot of fun to read.
Old Man Logan #25
written by Ed Brisson and drawn by Mike Deodato Jr.
This older version of Logan has recently gone through a traumatic transformation. He traveled into his past and had to live some of his greatest losses. Ultimately, he decided that he can no longer live in the past and must start living his life in the present, but the past does not always let go so easily. This time Wolverine is face-to-face with the old evil genius version of the Hulk known as the Maestro. An all-new writer and artist team are taking over the comic book series with this issue. Ed Brisson has proven himself on various books all over Marvel and Mike Deodata Jr. is already a fan favorite artist. This is a great time to jump on this book and catch up on the adventures of Old Man Logan.
Black Panther & The Crew #3
written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and drawn by Butch Guice
Sadly, this series is canceled, just as things were really kicking off. It will be allowed to finish its first storyline, at least. In this issue, the Black Panther lets it be known that he was once a friend of the late Ezra Miller. Black Panther finally enters this story of the secret history of the Marvel Universe. Harlem has always been a battle ground for superheroes, villains and minorities. The Black Panther and the Crew have almost formed, and the death of Ezra Miller still remains unsolved.
Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows TPB Vol. 1
written by Gerry Conway and drawn by Ryan Stegman
The Parker family is finally back together. In this alternate universe from the main Marvel world, Peter, Mary Jane, and their daughter Annie live in New York together and fight crime. Annie’s powers are still growing, and Mary Jane is just learning to use the new power suit Spider-Man built for her. In these first issues of the comic book, the Parker family takes on the Mole-Man and the Sandman. There is even a cameo appearance by this world’s version of the X-Men based on the 90’s version of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. If you are a fan of Spider-Man and miss his relationship with Mary Jane Watson, then this is the perfect series for you to jump into. This trade paperback collects Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #1-#5.
