As always, Wednesday is new comic book day and it’s never easy to pick out what comics are worth picking up. Here are some recommendations to help you out.
Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1
written by Chip Zdarsky & and drawn by Adam Kubert
Chip Zdarsky is a relatively new writer for Marvel, but he has already shown his skill with his Star-Lord and Howard the Duck series. Also his work on Sex Criminals earned him a whole new level of acclaim. I think its safe to say this series will be more tween friendly. They’ve brought back the Spectacular Spider-Man brand to get back to his neighborhood-friendly basics of being a superhero. It’s being sold as a companion series to the main Amazing Spider-Man line and, from the previews I’ve seen, this one looks more like your classic Saturday morning cartoon version of Spider-Man. Plus, a number one is always worth checking out.
Crosswind #1
written by Gail Simone and drawn by Cat Staggs
Gail Simone is one of the best people in the comic book industry and I’ll read anything she writes. This is her Image Comics debut, and it’s getting a lot of buzz. A lethal hitman and a somewhat average housewife swap bodies, and the consequences become deadly for both of them. This crazy premise promises to be “Freaky Friday meets Goodfellas.” With Simone at the helm, this story promises to be darkly humorous and entertainingly violent. This is also Cat Staggs Image comics debut as well. She is an up and coming illustrator, and her style for this book looks very noir-esque with a menacing color palette. This will be the first comic I pick up this week.
Batman #25
written by Tom King and drawn by Mikel Janin
Tom King’s run on the Batman comic book series has been revolutionary. All of us who’ve been reading it now see Batman in a whole new light. King has not only changed Batman, he has also changed the world around the Dark Knight. This new storyline proposes that a war has been going on in the shadows of Gotham city all this time between the Joker and the Riddler over who has the right to take on the Batman. Mikel Janin has also really delivered on the recent Batman run. His artwork for the Bane arc was pretty amazing, and his panel structuring and style has given Batman a whole new impressive look.
Aquaman #25
written by Dan Abnett and drawn by Stepan Sejic
This is one of the big anniversary comic book issues DC is putting out this week. It is also the beginning for new Aquaman artist Stepan Sejic. Dan Abnett has been writing this book for a little while now, and he has set up a pretty dire situation for Arthur Curry. Terrorists and criminals now control the police force and whole portions of the Atlantean kingdom. There are whispers of a possible hero in shadows of Atlantis, a rebel hero that could change the world. One last strand of hope remains for the people and to stop the villainous efforts of King Rath. This is a great time to get on board as we get more information on Jason Momoa’s version of DC’s Aquaman.
Star Wars: Doctor Aphra TPB Vol. 1
written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Kev Walker
Marvel’s various Star Wars series have been some of the highest quality, and the most popular comic book series in the market the past few years. Doctor Aphra was a breakout star of the Darth Vader Marvel series also written by Kieron Gillen. She barely escaped the dark lord of the Sith with her life and now she must never let them know she is still alive. It’s time for Aphra to get back to business and start making some money. She’s off to the far corners of the galaxy to search for rare and valuable artifacts. She has to stay ahead of bounty hunters, the empire, and everyone else in the galaxy that she owes money to. This series collects the first six issues of the series.
