What We Do In the Shadows is a wonderful surprise, blending witty comedy with Taika Waititi’s dry sensibilities. It is a film that put the young director in the crosshairs of Marvel Studios looking for a director to refresh the Thor franchise.
They hit a home run, nabbing Waititi, and Thor: Ragnarok was a hit. Could the director be returning for What We Do In the Shadows 2?
During a recent panel at New York Comic Con, executive producer Paul Simms spoke about a story arc that could see the vampires from the first film meet up with the “cooler” vampires of Manhatten:
They sort of think that Staten Island is all of New York or maybe even all of America, but there’s a whole story where they go into Manhattan for the first time to meet the Manhattan vampires, who are a little bit cooler than they are.
This doesn’t mean that a sequel is already moving forward. But it could be the right nudge the studio needs to greenlight the project. This could also be a strategic play by the studio to gauge the fan reaction tot he news, in order to see if a sequel would be viable.
A lot of times, these great indie flicks get sequels with big budgets and travel down the wrong path. The sequels fail because rather than building on the things that made the first film successful, they try to reinvent the wheel. This is a process that alienates fans. We can only hope that What We Do In the Shadows 2 doesn’t fall victim to this trend.
