Dan Aykroyd Just Laid into Director Paul Feig Over The Handling of the ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot

Let’s clear the air for a moment. The reboot of the beloved 1980s franchise Ghostbusters, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Kristen Wiig pretty much sucked. The pacing was wrong, the comedy was not that good, and every call back to the original felt forced. One advocate for the film was original Ghostbusters alumni Dan Aykroyd. When the film hit theaters, Aykroyd had nothing but praise for the reboot. In a recent interview, Aykroyd blames Paul Feig’s directing for why we won’t see Ghostbusters II.

In an interview with Britain’s Sunday Brunch, Aykroyd was asked about the Ghostbusters reboot, which looks to not get a sequel due to poor box office numbers. He didn’t hesitate to rave about the female-led cast, but didn’t hold back when he talked about Feig. He talked about Feig’s inability to listen to feedback that led to the studio ordering reshoots costing up to $40 million:

“[Ghostbusters] made a lot of money around the world but just cost too much, making it economically not feasible to do another one. So that’s too bad. The director, he spent too much on it. He didn’t shoot scenes we suggested to him and several scenes that were going to be needed and he said, ‘Nah, we don’t need them.’ Then we tested the movie and they needed them and he had to go back. About $30 to $40-million in reshoots. So he will not be back on the Sony lot any time soon.”

A video of the interview was posted on Ross Maclean’s Twitter:

The film has been criticized for relying too much on ad-lib, rather than a structured script that set up jokes the way that the first film did. It is assumed that the studio wanted more references to the original films, which was a big problem for the film. The film really had no chance on its own, relying heavily on forced gags and tried too hard to pay tribute to the original. Aykroyd’s rant about Feig was cut when the show was re-aired. Aykroyd did praise the cast, and loved the film overall. Well, at least that is one person who liked it.
