DC FanDome: First Look at ‘The Batman’

Adam West, Michael Keaton, Kevin Conroy, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck and Iain Glenn. These are the men who have brought Bruce Wayne to live-action on the big or small screen. Their ranks are increasing in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

Set in its own world in the new DC Cinematic Universe, The Batman sees Robert Pattinson suit up as the titular character. Bruce is only in his second year as Batman and is partly a myth to the citizens of Gotham. Excitedly, we have the first footage of the movie that’s only had 25% shot due to the pandemic.

Take a look at the trailer below:

Wow. Just wow. The opening sets the tone for the trailer, and the entire film. It’s looking to be part of the detective noir genre and it’s about time that side of Batman is given its chance to properly shine.

Bear in mind this is the first time the Riddler appears in the universe and that’s why he’s looking creepy. He’s very reminiscent of the Zodiac Killer and that goes further with the cryptic cards he’s sending Batman.

But what’s more interesting is that one of the cards features an owl. Could this be a hint toward a future plot featuring the Court of Owls?

Considering Matt Reeves is teasing The Batman delves into Gotham’s corruption, it only makes sense. The Court of Owls is at the heart of the corruption in the comics. They will be featuring in the upcoming Gotham Knights video game.

Another major point from the trailer is the first look at Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot. At DC FanDome, Reeves confirms Oswald is also starting out and hates the Penguin nickname. If you didn’t know this is Colin Farrell then I don’t blame you. The prosthetic by Mike Marino is astounding.

There’s also shots of Zoe Kravitz’ Selina Kyle, along with Jeffery Wright’s James Gordon. At this point, Gordon isn’t Commissioner but with Riddler targeting the corruption in Gotham, the position might open. Furthermore, there is also a recognzsable voice at parts.

That voice belongs to Andy Serkis who is no stranger to working with Matt Reeves. However, there is one moment that will make animated Batman fans happy.

Before he beats down a thug, Batman is asked who he thinks he is. He replies “I’m vengeance.” This is part of a famous line by Kevin Conroy’s Batman. “I am vengeance, I am the night. I am Batman.” However, whether we’ll actually hear the rest of it is up for debate.

And we won’t find out until The Batman releases October 1, 2012.
