The Aquaman spin-off rumored months ago featuring the creatures from the Trench finally gets a bit of news. Director James Wan goes on record to talk about The Trench, a film in its really early stages.
In a recent interview with Comic Book, James Wan talks about the direction of the film. He states the movie is a “monster horror movie”. He goes on to say that it is a part of the Aquaman movie universe:
We’re still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don’t want to get into that too much. But
definitely it’s one that I really want to lean into the horror of it.So it’s going to play more
as a monster horror movie than it will as a superhero film. But it’s still definitely part of the Aquaman world.
The Trench might be the change-up that DC fans need. It will add a genre not covered by Marvel to the DCEU. It would give the film a chance to grow its own wings, rather than feeling constrained by the previous films before it.
The DCEU is slowly starting to move in the right direction, abandoning the Marvel formula for smaller character-focused films, rather than rushing team-ups and major hero films.
