Avengers: Endgame will get another good chance to top Avatar’s monumental box office record beginning next week. Endgame will re-release in theaters with new footage beginning next weekend.
This move should put the film well ahead of Avatar and secure the record for Marvel Studios. The second run for Avengers: Endgame comes with additional footage that didn’t make it into the original theatrical cut.
Normally, this means it just has an extra scene or two, but in the final days of editing, the Russo’s had a much larger film. This means that there is plenty there for Marvel to pull from, including polished scenes.
The announcement comes a few weeks before the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home. The film marks the official end of the current phase for Marvel.
At a recent Far From Home press junket, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told ComicBook.com that Endgame was getting a theatrical re-release. Feige also stated that there would be additional material included in the release:
“We are doing that, I don’t know if it’s been announced. And I don’t know how much… Yeah, we’re doing it next weekend.”
Avatar hit $2.788 billion during its run in theaters. Avengers: Endgame is very close to that with $2.743 billion. The second run will push the film past Avatar, and the prospect of new footage will bring many fans out for another viewing.
