The Mario universe is blasting off again. The sequel to 2023’s billion-dollar hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, hits theaters on April 3, 2026.

Inspired by the beloved 2007 Nintendo Wii title, the film is expected to lean on the cosmic themes and visuals that made the game a fan favorite. But it will also surprise audiences with nods to other eras of the Mario franchise.

The sequel reunites much of the star-studded voice cast that helped the first movie break records. Chris Pratt returns as Mario, alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are once again at the helm, with Matthew Fogel handling the script and Brian Tyler composing the score. With so much of the original team back on board, Illumination and Nintendo are clearly aiming to recapture the magic of the first film.

A brief teaser premiered during a recent Nintendo Direct. It offers fans a taste of what’s to come. The trailer opens in the Mushroom Kingdom, where Mario naps peacefully beneath a tree. A butterfly drifts skyward until the scene transitions into space, signaling the galactic adventure ahead.

The teaser didn’t reveal much in terms of new planets or characters. Cosmic imagery immediately sparked excitement, particularly among fans hoping to see the introduction of Rosalina and the Lumas—two of the most iconic characters from the Galaxy games.

Expectations for the sequel are sky-high. The Super Mario Galaxy games are inventive planetary exploration and unique gravity mechanics. These elements could translate into visually stunning set pieces on the big screen. Fans are also eager to see how Illumination balances the playful tone of the Mario world with the grandeur of space.

Will the film weave in callbacks to multiple Mario eras, as promised by the creative team?

The potential for Easter eggs and fan-service moments is enormous.

Beyond its creative ambitions, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie carries enormous cultural weight. Its release is part of Nintendo’s broader celebration of Mario’s 40th anniversary. The original film grossed more than $1.36 billion worldwide. The sequel’s one of the most highly anticipated animated films of 2026.

Nintendo has also been re-releasing the Galaxy games for modern platforms, suggesting a coordinated strategy to keep momentum strong ahead of launch.

Of course, much remains under wraps. Plot details are still a mystery. Nintendo has yet to confirm which new characters will join the adventure. Fans will be watching closely for trailers and casting updates in the coming months. Will Rosalina finally make her big-screen debut?
