The first trailer for the Jordan Peele-produced Candyman sequel dropped earlier today, and it looks great. Directed by Nia DaCosta, Candyman‘s considered a ‘spiritual sequel‘ rather than a reboot, although I have no idea exactly what that is.
Check out the first trailer below:
This movie is almost seems like a prequel of sorts. The trailer returns to Cabrini Green, where the legend began. The Chicago neighborhood’s gone through gentrification since we last saw it.
Tony Todd seems to be back as the main villain in this film, but his face appears covered throughout most of this trailer. This is due to his age, which the film will adopt a de-aging process when his face’s visible. A brief reflection of Todd’s face can be seen at the end of the trailer.
The biggest surprise of the trailer’s that Vanessa Williams reprising her role of Anne-Marie McCoy from the first film. It’s confirmed that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s her son in the film. He is the grown version of the baby saved at the end of the first film.
In the trailer, it appears that the young artist, Abdul-Mateen II’s character may become the new vessel for the Candyman himself. The trailer looks great, and DaCosta says the film’s embracing the gore.
According to DaCosta, another main theme of the film’s ghosts left behind because of gentrification. Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo and Tony Todd co-star in the film.
