Guy Ritchie’s in-your-face epic, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword will give viewers a completely different experience with the famous legendary tale. His films are full of quick pacing and amazing action. It looks like King Arthur will bring a lot more of the same formula. The film’s star Charlie Hunnam says that the film was cut down considerably, with the opening sequence going from 30 to 40 minutes down to a ten-minute sequence.
In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, Hunnam talks about trimming the film down, and also Ritchie’s process making the film. The scene in question is a sequence where Arthur and his friends recall encountering Vikings to an acquaintance. This scene was originally was 3-4 times longer in the original cut:
“What’s also interesting about Guy is that so much of the work that he does happens in the editing room, where there’s this grand reimagining.
That Jack’s Eye sequence that you’re talking about wasn’t in the original script. There was an effort to condense significantly the first 30 or 40 minutes of the film down to a ten-minute sequence. Because his original cut came in at three and a half hours and we had to trim that down.
So that was a scene that he designed to facilitate us going in and out and doing a short-hand of 20 scenes that played out in a linear fashion that he wanted to condense down into one montage.”
The rough cut of the film came in at 210 minutes. But the final film was cut down to 126 minutes. This is a considerable amount of time cut from the original film. Does this mean that there will be a director’s cut of the film when King Arthur hits Blu-ray? It is almost a sure bet, but we will have to wait for an official announcement to find out.
