Jude Law plays the newly elected pope in the upcoming HBO miniseries, The Young Pope, that has raised a lot of eyebrows recently. Even more so now that the channel has released a trailer. As much a political figure as a spiritual beacon, the series intends to show that there is more things on the minds of Vatican City inhabitants and its leaders. The series has received the grand HBO treatment in both its writing and presentation.
In the trailer, Law’s character announces, “Like Mary, virginal mother; like man, good and evil; I’m God”. The teaser further notes that he “does not negotiate on anything or with anyone,” and that, as the first American pope, he intends to ignite a revolution.
“They chose a pope they didn’t know, and today, they’ll begin to realize who I am,” he concludes.
Sexy Pope?
HBO has reached in and brought forth a more mod, sexed up pontiff in the form of Jude Law. He stars in the ten part miniseries by director Paolo Sorrentino. Due here in early next year, Vanity Fair says:
finds Law’s character, Lenny Belardo, ascending to the papacy as Pope Pius XIII on the wings of intrigue. He’s the first American pope, and staunchly conservative. And for those who think Pope Francis is bringing changes to the Vatican, hold onto your fancy hats; it looks like Law’s character has way bigger changes in mind. For now, though, it’s hard to say exactly what those plans are, aside from “revolution.”
The first two episodes premiered in Venice, and will air in England later this month. Reviews have been strong and was well received by the Venice audience.
While us in the have to wait longer, the trailer entices you enough to accept the wait. In addition to Law, Young Pope stars Diane Keaton.
