Lionsgate pulls the Hellboy reboot from cinemas after only a five-week-run in theaters. After a flood of negative reviews, the film made just $21.9 million domestically. This comes as a surprise to everyone.
The reboot didn’t stand a chance, even with David Harbour in the lead role. The darker reboot only garnered $12.05 million on opening weekend, and since then didn’t make much more.

The first two Hellboy films made $59.6 million and $75.9 million domestically. This is a huge difference. So, why did this film do so poorly? A few things stand out. The first two films were directed by Guillermo del Toro in his prime.
The reviews for the film were not great. By that, I mean they were pretty bad. The main characters overall look is a bit off-putting. It’s been something that eats at me every time I look at images of David Harbour in costume. His appearance just doesn’t look right.

Hellboy didn’t do well in overseas markets either. The movie made only $18.1 million to this point, bringing in a total of $40 million. Hellboy had a budget of $50 million, so the film will lose money. A home media announcement should come soon.

What is next for Hellboy? The studio hoped this turned into a franchise, but after horrible box office numbers, how can a sequel get the green light?
