We are living interesting times. There’s never been an opportunity for a studio to redeem a horrible movie by re-releasing the same basic film with added footage. Zack Snyder’s Justice League did just that. How does Snyder feel now that Ben Affleck as Batman’s officially done in the DCEU?
We could write a dissertation on what exactly went wrong with the initial theatrical cut of the Justice League. Let’s just settle on everything. It was a hot mess.
It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. This wasn’t the original plans for the DCEU. The biggest issues with the DCEU is the timeline that Warner Brothers wanted for the cinematic universe.
It forced the hand of directors and caused things to play out at an extremely accelerated pace.
The few films before Justice League desperately tried to plan out enough easter eggs to set up the big team-up film. A ton of spin-offs and sequel films were originally in the slate, but those are all cancelled now.
The DCEU changed gears, and the state of the cinematic universe is in a state of flux. A Batman spin-off starring Ben Affleck’s version of the character. Affleck was supposed to star and direct the film.
Ben Affleck’s stand-alone film would feature the Batman villain Deathstroke (Joe Manganiello). Affleck initially left the directors chair for the film, before ultimately leaving the project all together.
Ultimately, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is the conclusion of Ben Affleck’s story arc in the DCEU. Zack Snyder recently spoke to Variety about how he feels about the end of Affleck’s Batman story arc:
I mean, look, there were supposed to be two more movies, so there was always more story to tell with Ben. But I’m pretty happy with the arc that this movie afforded me and the way we ended Ben Affleck’s Batman.
I just think that he learned a lot. He’s a different person than he was in Batman v Superman. He’s on his way toward being the kind of the dad of the Justice League. But there was more story.
