Hulu has officially scrapped plans to adapt a Ghost Rider live-action series for Marvel Studios. The cancellation comes a mere four months after Hulu made a straight-to-series order.
In the Marvel series, Gabriel Luna was set to reprise the role of Robbie Reyes, first seen in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The series was not a spin-off of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but rather a stand-alone show.
Here is a brief background for Robbie Reyes:
The story would’ve revolved around anti-hero Robbie Reyes, a man who lives on the Texas/Mexico border and is consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. When he unleashes the Rider, he brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters.
According to The Live Feed, the show got the ax due to creative issues involving the direction of the show. Paul Zbyszewski and Jeph Loeb were set to executive produce, with Ingrid Escajeda (Justified) in the drivers’ seat.
Ghost Rider is the third Marvel straight-to-series show dropped in the last few years, following Freeform’s New Warriors and a Donald Glover-led animated Deadpool series.
The other series ordered from Hulu is Helstorm, which joins Marvel’s Runaways and a number of animated series in the pipeline. Kevin Feige recently said that Ghost Rider would work great on Disney+. There is a good chance an announcement will come in the near future.
