Outlaw King is the story of Robert the Bruce, the Scottish King, taking up the fight against the English. It takes place over several years, culminating at the 1307 Battle of Loudon Hill. He becomes an outlaw because he goes against the rule of the English and fights for the independence of Scotland.

The movie starts in 1304 where Robert the Bruce and other Scottish noblemen give in to the English monarch Edward I. In return, their lands are returned to them and Robert marries Edward’s goddaughter Elizabeth De Burgh. This is where the peace stops though, as Robert realizes he doesn’t trust Edward.

It jumps forward in time to a time where William Wallace is no longer alive and the people of Scotland are wanting to revolt against the English crown. Much like Braveheart, Outlaw King is said to focus more on the battles and less on fact-checking its Historical accuracy.

The battle sequences are critically applauded, even though one had to be taken out due to its length.
