J.J. Abrams has had a stellar career, having a hand in working on a lot of extremely popular and established franchises along the way. You could say that he is a bit of a commodity in Hollywood when it comes to reboots and sequels. Mission: Impossible 3, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Super 8 are a few of the films that grace his resume. You can say that Super 8 isn’t a sequel, but it is an homage to 1980s films and Steven Spielberg.
It seems that Abrams is now wanting to get away from doing these films, and is looking to establish his own legacy. Speaking at the Golden Globe Awards last night, Abrams says that he wants to start making films that other directors and studios will want to eventually reboot in the future:
“You know, I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten involved in things that I loved when I was a kid. In fact, even Westworld, which we’re here for tonight, is one of them. But I don’t feel any desire to do that again. I feel like I’ve done enough of that I’m more excited about working on things that are original ideas that perhaps one day someone else will have to reboot.
I do think that if you’re telling a story that is not moving anything forward, not introducing anything that’s relevant, that’s not creating a new mythology or an extension of it, then a complete remake of something feels like a mistake.”
Abrams was in attendance at the Globes last night for HBO’s hit new series Westworld. He has not signed on to his next film yet, but is executive producing a number of films and series due out in the next few years.
What kind of film do you think that J.J. Abrams will do next?
