In a surprise turn of news, Microsoft looks to drop not just one, but two new XBox consoles in the Holiday season of 2020. This means there will be a console everyone can afford, come next Christmas.
A recent report by The Verge seems to confirm that Microsoft definitely plans to drop not just one new next-generation XBox console next year. This newer console will be disc-less and is not the previously announced Project Scarlett.
This new console has the codename ‘Lockhart’ and is a stripped-down version of the big console coming in 2020. This console’s not as powerful as its bigger brother. The main Project Scarlett console sails under the codename ‘Anaconda’.
These consoles aim to be the next-gen XBox One S and XBox One X, where one is cheaper and a little different to accommodate the lower price point. Microsoft’s reportedly sought feedback from developers about its next-generation plans for XBox.
The biggest difference between the two consoles comes down to discs. Anaconda has the ability to play discs, while Lockhart (its cheaper counterpart) relies solely on digital downloads.
Kotaku reports the Lockhart will boast 1440p definition gaming, while Anaconda will play in 4K. Lockhart also has a slower clock speed than its sister console.
Graphical power’s another big difference between the consoles. Lockhart’s targeting 4 teraflops and Anaconda over 10 teraflops. In comparison, the XBox One X has 6 teraflops, PS4 Pro 4.2, and the PC gaming graphics card (RTX 2080Ti) has 13.2 teraflops.
This means that Anaconda’s set to rival the most powerful graphics card on the market. Pricing points for each console are unknown at the time of this article.
