8. Mank
Mank is directed by David Fincher, and tells the story of Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish his screenplay for Citizen Kane. By no means a bad movie, it doesn’t quite reach the heights of some of the other films on this list.
Fincher and DoP Erik Messerschmidt shoot a beautiful frame. The movie looks gorgeous, and honors the “golden age” of cinema without ever drifting into pretension.
Gary Oldman as the title character is reliably excellent. Amanda Seyfried also turns in a solid supporting performance, as do the rest of the cast.
The script (penned by Fincher’s father, Jack, back in the 90’s) is dripping with wit, striking a great balance between irreverent cynicism and obstinate achievement.
Mank should also be noted for racking up 10 nominations at this year’s Oscars; more than any other film by a decent amount. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to sweep the board with wins.
Still, it’s worth checking out for fans of the creative team and of old school filmmaking.
