Recently, it was announced that the main antagonist in the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe film, Aquaman, would be none other than Aquaman’s greatest villain, Orm aka Ocean Master. Warner Brothers has cast Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring 2, Watchmen) as Ocean Master in the James Wan film, and it is a great casting.
Wilson has worked with Wan a few times, most notably in The Conjuring series. What makes Ocean Master such a great villain is that he is the half-brother of Aquaman, and brings a dynamic to Aquaman akin to Loki and Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The family dynamic will bring a fresh conflict to the DC Cinematic Universe.
Wilson talked about his excitement for the role in a recent interview with WBT:
“What’s gonna be interesting is there hasn’t been the technology to back up the storytelling, I guess, for Aquaman… until now. And for me, of course, I’m completely biased with James Wan, who I’ve done four films with — knowing that he’s at the helm and knowing what he … can do and what he will do, I’ll do anything with him.
I think the lure of Aquaman [is] because he hasn’t been overexposed on-screen, and I don’t know Jason — I can’t wait to meet him. I was a huge fan even from the first episode of Game of Thrones, so I’m in — I’m in with him, and he’s gonna be fantastic.”
Ocean Master will be a great villain, and there have been rumors swirling that the film will also include Black Manta, another villain for the King of Atlantis. This will give the film two villains that will continue the DC EU’s trend of having more than one villain in their films. Will this pose another problem for DC, or will this film change the way Warner Bros. handles a film with multiple enemies. It has been a bit of a problem in the past.
Aquaman is now shooting for an October 2018 theatrical release.
