All Quiet on the Western Front is the newest movie by director Edward Berger. Its script is written by the director, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell. It stars Felix Kammer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Aaron Hilmer and more. If you’re looking for an amazing movie to easily access on Netflix then look no further than this latest rendition of a classic novel.
It reflects how selective European film markets have to be when approaching blockbusters. Unlike Hollywood, they don’t have an abundance of large budgets. Therefore, when it comes to spending a larger budget, they’re going to make sure to tell a meaningful story that uses its elevated assets in the best way.
All Quiet on the West Front is produced in Germany. It’s the most graphic and grisly adaptation of the book providing a cinematic experience that dives you into the living hell of war. It’s honestly one of the best war movies I’ve seen since Saving Private Ryan. In terms of recent war movies, I put it above Dunkirk and 1917.
It utilizes a rather minimalist score with industrial undertones to build respective moods at any given moment. When it uses CGI, it feels immersive and looks realistic. I really think this is better than a lot of Hollywood blockbusters I’ve seen in recent years. Therefore, I have no reservations about calling it one of the best films of 2022.
I regret not experiencing All Quiet on the Western Front on the big screen at the Netflix theater. However, if the Oscar buzz around its international feature nomination gains elevation, there will likely be a second run. If that happens, I’ll definitely be making the trip to see it where it belongs. If you prefer to watch the movie in its original German language make sure to set your audio to that on Netflix. The app tends to automatically play the English dub for American subscribers.
It’s an absolutely heart-wrenching experience. This is the time of year when my best of the year takes shape. There’s no question that this movie is going to be on it. Do yourself a favour and watch it. Although, be aware it pulls no punches and provides several moments that are hard to watch.
