Review – Millarworld’s ‘Prodigy: The Icarus Society #4’

Prodigy is a comic book series by Mark Millar and Rafael Albuquerque. Volume 2 sees art by Matteo Buggani. Image Comics publishes the series. If you’re looking for past reviews, you’ll only find a review for issue 1. Unfortunately, when the other two issues were released I was unwell and unable to review them. However, I’m caught up with this volume and will use this review to focus on issues 2 and 3 before looking at Prodigy: The Icarus Society #4.

Issue 1 ends with Edison Crane finding out about the Icarus Society. Issue 2 picks up with Edison finding out about the treasure Neil Armstrong went after in the 70s. Throughout issues 2 and 3 there are plenty of twists and turns. When you think you’re getting respite, everything you know changes. By the time the third issue ends the story isn’t where you expect. It’s this device of storytelling that keeps Prodigy fresh.

Prodigy: The Icarus Society #4 opens with a flashback. Most of the issue is quiet and revolves around the journey to Shangri-La. It’s an exploration of the characters that are seemingly building to an explosive ending. While his travel companions are too busy with wanting Shangri-La, Edison’s thoughts are on the injured woman he’s carrying. This shows the difference between him and the members of the Icarus Society.

By the end of this issue, you’ll be wanting to see what happens next.

Moreover, Prodigy: The Icarus Society #4 answers several questions while raising more. The look of Shangri-La is beautiful. This bountiful art comes from Matteo Buffgani. There are several panels that would look amazing in live-action. The art I want to talk about comes with spoilers. That’s why I’ll merely say Matteo’s work is sublime.
