Review: Millarworld’s ‘The Magic Order Vol 3 #6’

The Magic Order Vol 3 #6 is the latest issue in the Image comic series created by Mark Millar and Olivier Coipel. The series is currently in its third volume. If you’ve missed the first two volumes, they’re available to purchase online, but more importantly, from your local comic book store. You can find my reviews for the second volume here.

The Magic Order revolves around a group of magic wielders who protect the world from dangerous threats. It also doesn’t shy away from tackling heavy subjects. The story centres around the family who lead The Magic Order – the Moonstones. In particular, it’s the rebel daughter Cordelia whose usually more of a focus.

Let’s see what’s in store in The Magic Order Vol 3 #6.

Well, here it is. The Magic Order Vol 3 #6 is the final installment of this volume. Most plots are verging and coming to a head. However, it’s not all about the destination but rather the journey that got us there. In truth, the issue acts more like an epilogue to the previous five entries. We see the aftermath of issue five’s revelation with Reagan. Unfortunately, Cordelia needs to watch her brother lose his powers and there’s nothing she can do about it. This is the way of The Magic Order.

Meanwhile, we follow the matriarch and patriarch of the Moonstone family. They’re finally reaching their destination to take down the Puzzle. But, before they do, they have years to catch up on and there might be a romantic dinner involved.

Of course, never expect everything to go as planned. This is a Mark Millar story after all. At first, it seems like a simple epilogue but, as a time travelling archaeologist would say… spoilers.

The Magic Order Vol 3 is the final issue from Gigi Cavengo. For the next volume, there’s a new artist. This has happened on the other volumes as well. Just as I was for Olivier Coipel and Stuart Immonen, I’ll be sad to see Gigi go. His art has been nothing sort of spellbinding. It’s been a pleasure combing through the issues and marvelling at his work. I’ll definitely need to check out what else he’s provided art for.

He came into an established series with ease. His art wasn’t a rehash of what came before nor was it out of the left field. It was the perfect balance of old and new that elevated this third collected entry in the series.

The Magic Order Vol 3 #6 releases Wednesday 28th December 2022.
