Netflix, Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast, and directors Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame) are coming together to make a new anime television series based on the award-winning fantasy card game Magic: The Gathering.
It’s the first time that Magic: The Gathering gets an adaptation to the screen. Henry Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels) and Jose Molina (Agent Carter) take lead writing roles on the series and the Russo’s serve as executive producers.
Episode order and length of each installment isn’t being decided on, as Netflix will let the storytelling drive the decision. The new story focuses on the Planeswalkers as they fight larger forces than any realm can face.
In 2014, Fox attempted to bring Magic: The Gathering to the big screen, but the film never got made. Magic boasts 38 million fans since its inception in 1993.
Each game of Magic represents a battle between wizards known as planeswalkers. They cast spells, use artifacts, and summon creatures as depicted on individual cards in order to defeat their opponents. A player wins by draining them of their 20 starting life points.
Although the original concept of the game drew heavily from the motifs of traditional fantasy role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons.
The gameplay bears little similarity to pencil-and-paper adventure games, while simultaneously having substantially more cards and more complex rules than many other card games.
It can be played in various rule formats, which fall into two categories: constructed and limited.

In constructed formats, players create decks from cards they own, usually with a minimum of 60 cards per deck.
