Two weeks into the release, and we have many reasons why Suicide Squad is not impressing critics and fans alike. Many cite bad reviews, fan reaction, a lackluster Joker, and an overloaded cast for being why they will skip the film in theaters. I will agree with most of them, but the film was not horrible, and has some great moments. It also has its fair share of WTF moments as well. Adam Beach’s Slipknot was one of these WTF inclusions into the film.
(((SPOILERS AHEAD)))
Everyone that saw Suicide Squad wondered why would they even include Adam Beach’s Slipknot in the film at all. He was in the film for under 5 minutes and then was just killed off. Fans of the Suicide Squad comics know that placing explosives in the members of the team was standard practice, but did Ayer really include Slipknot in the film to kill him off? It seems odd that he would do this, and Slipknot’s lack of screen time has most people wondering if there wasn’t more to his role that was cut in editing.
All of the Slipknot fans can rest easy. In an interview this week on the Empire podcast, Ayer confirmed that Slipknot had a back story and footage that was trimmed from the final cut of the movie. He cites that like Jared Leto’s Joker, Slipknot was mostly cut from the film for time related issues (not because his special power is he ties knots):
“Yeah we shot [a back story], but after a point it became overloaded, ya know, so you have to cull and pick and choose your battles, and Slipknot gets his head blown off pretty quick, so ya know, I made a commitment early on not to try and create some kind of misdirect because when you have that many characters every frame of real estate is priceless, and I didn’t want to invest in that real estate to create some misdirect because after opening night everyone knows he dies anyway.”
Slipknot dies quickly in the film. Knowing that most of his role was cut out would explain why his entrance and his exit were mere moments from each other. Beach was included in most of the promotional material for the film. Unfortunately, his role in them was minimal as well. Beach previously suggested that Slipknot was captured trying to strangle Wonder Woman, but Ayer says that wasn’t the case:
“Ya know, that might be more about his sort of personal journey to getting into the character more than anything, but I guess it does make sense if it’s a rope guy. I could see where he could make those connections.”
After its second weekend in theaters Suicide Squad has made $465 million worldwide. Can it continue to make money over the next few weeks?
Do you wish that there was more Slipknot?
