Thursday Sony dropped a bombshell on gaming fans by finally revealing the first look at the Playstation 5. More details continue to surface regarding the next-generation console in the days since the reveal.
In a recent interview with CNET, Sony Playstation CEO Jim Ryan says that the console saw no setbacks despite the continuing coronavirus pandemic.
The big reveal presentation on Tuesday showed fans over two dozens games hitting the console at launch.
More than half of these games were Playstation exclusives, which is something that should make fans rejoice. (PS fans hold their console exclusives near and dear to their hearts.)
Ryan says that they:
“really want to convey the message that we’re only getting started here… what we’re doing with PS5 really represents a quantum leap over the current generation.”
He goes on to say that Sony wanted to do something different with the look of the Playstation 5:
“We wanted to do something that was bold and daring almost. We wanted something forward facing and future facing, something for the 2020s.”
The white-and-black color scheme of the console is the only variation available at launch. In the future, other variations will be available to consumers. There’s most-certainly an all-black version in the conversation.
An interesting design feature of the console’s that the texture of the console isn’t stippling or wave matrix designs, rather it’s tiny Playstation logos embossing the plastic.
The Playstation 5 is a big machine. The height of the console sits at 40cm/15.74 inches, length of 10.06cm/3.97 inches and a width of 22.78cm/8.97 inches.
Both the Playstation 5 and the Xbox X Series greatly increased size compared to earlier consoles.
According to the Amazon France listing, the new Playstation console’s also heavier than previous consoles. The entire package comes in at 3 inches taller and 2 inches wider than the PS4 Pro.
The Xbox Series X is 6 x 6 inch square and 12 inches tall. The internet’s even began a small men war over the new design of the console.
The new Playstation 4.78kg (10.5lbs) compared to the 3.3kg (7.3lbs) of the PS4 Pro in its box. The new system’s also backwards compatible:
“The PS5 has been designed to play PS4 games. We’re going through the process with the publishers and developers testing that rather exhaustive library of over 4,000 games. We’re happy with the present progress.”
Ryan went on to say that the Playstation 5’s also compatible with Playstation VR. The new playstation console features a camera that’s not included at launch, but rather will be sold as a peripheral.
