‘The Christmas Chronicles Part II’ Spreads Festive Joy

Director: Chris Columbus

Writers: Matt Lieberman & Chris Columbus

Starring: Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, Darby Camp, Julian Dennison, Jahzir Bruno & Judah Lewis

The Christmas Chronicles Part II is the sequel to the Clay Kaytis-directed Netflix Original. This time Kate (Darby) and her step-brother, Jack (Jahzir) aid Santa (Kurt) and Mrs Claus (Goldie) against the rebellious Belsnickel (Julian). Kurt Russel shines once again as kindly old Saint Nick but it’s the kids who steal the limelight.

Like most Christmas stories, it’s a family movie. However, when you have Kurt Russell as Santa Claus, nothing is going to be stereotypical. This is a Santa who enjoys adventure and action. You may even say he craves it.

Luckily for him, it’s an adventure he needs to go on to stop Belsnickel from destroying Christmas.

The Christmas Chronicles Part II is a blend of genres that isn’t afraid to throw in a musical number, no matter how random it might seem. Coming from the director of the first two Harry Potters, Home Alone and Rent it isn’t surprising. What is it, although, is a load of joyous fun that will put you in the festive spirit.

If I had to point out one flaw it’s the villain. This isn’t a knock on Julian Dennison as he is great as Belsnickel. The issue comes from his motivation. Belsnickel is unhappy Santa spends less time with him and focuses more on spreading Christmas cheer.

But where it lacks in the villain department, it sure makes up in spreading the spirit of Christmas. If you’re looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cheer and maybe even weep, then The Christmas Chronicles Part II is the movie for you.

If you want to see Kurt Russell donning the red coat while riding a sleigh like he’s a cowboy, then this is also the movie for you. There truly is something for everyone in this sequel. Here’s hoping Netflix sees the sense to commission a third.
