Star Wars: the Last Jedi edged out Disney’s Beauty and the Beast for the top domestic grossing film of 2017. Beauty and the Beast held the honor for the majority fo the year, but with anticipation for The Last Jedi peaking, it was going to be hard for Beast to hold on until the new year. There were some other notable films that topped this list, with some surprising additions.
What other films join Jedi and Beast at the top of the mountain? Check out the complete list below.

Another notable thing here is that the top three films of 2017 all focus on a female lead. Wonder Woman is the highest grossing superhero origin film of all time, as well as becoming the highest-grossing film directed by a woman. Disney’s attempt to gobble up other big studios is working for them, with the mouse-house holding 5 of the top spots. If the Disney-21st Century Fox acquisition happens, then Disney will hold 6 of the top 10 highest domestic grossing films in 2017. Disney is becoming a film giant, an even bigger powerhouse than they already were.
Warner Bros. Pictures holds 3 of the other spots on the list with IT, Wonder Woman, and Justice League. With two films that made over $500 million worldwide this year. Last years 10th place finisher was Sing, whose $270 million take beat out this years bottom three films (Despicable Me 3, Logan, and Justice League). Beast and the Beast, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Despicable Me 3, and The Fate of the Furious (11th place) all grossed over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.
The 2017 box office was not without its success stories, but fell short of 2016s record numbers. This year did continue the streak of the domestic box office topping $11 billion dollars. It is also important to note that each of these years saw a Star Wars movie release.
