The Woes of Making ‘Blade Runner 2’, According to Denis Villeneuve

The immense pressures that come with making a sequel to one of the biggest science fiction films of all time, must be unimaginable. Not only do you have the studio in your face about making a good film, but you have to appease a fan base that has their preconceived notions on what the sequel should be. These are just a few of the challenges that director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) is facing in making Blade Runner 2. I am convinced Blade Runner 2 will not make everyone happy, but it is in good hand now.

How do you begin to follow-up the 1982 classic? Well, you get Ridley Scott on the production team. This is a no-brainer, but having the original mind behind the Blade Runner franchise is a good start. In a recent interview with THR, Villeneuve says that sometimes you just let the project become what it wants to be, and not try to continue the legacy:

“First of all, it’s not possible to live up to the original. It’s Ridley Scott, it’s a masterpiece. It’s one of the best sci-fi films, one of the best films in the past 50 years. For me, what terrorizes me right now is what I’m doing is taking Blade Runner and making it my own, and that is horrific. To realize that when I look at the dailies, it’s not Ridley Scott, it’s me, and that it’s different. It’s still the same universe, we are still in the same dream, but it’s mine, so it’s like I have no idea how you people will react, I don’t know. It has its own life.”

So, what do we know about the sequel? We know that Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard is back. Unfortunately, we may never know if he was or was not a Replicant.  Ryan Gosling, Lennie James, Robin Wright, and Jared Leto are on board with the sequel.
