Getting any reoccurring role in a Marvel film is big now. When the studio can bring in huge actors like Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), you know that everyone in Hollywood is clamoring for a spot in their lineup. Not only do these roles mean a big payday, but the also have the potential for a multiple movie contract. This is a life changing event for any actor or actress. With fans grasping for any tidbit of information about castings, Marvel need to stay secretive. So secretive that they even don’t let casted actors know they landed the roles first. This was the case with Marvel’s newest Spider-Man, Tom Holland.

According to Holland, the casting process was long. Instead of being notified by Marvel that he got the part, he found out about his casting as the Webslinger through Instagram, of all places. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter via io9, Holland says that he found out about the cast the same way everyone else did, while he was browsing through the social media site:

I was in my bed scrolling through Instagram. It had been about a month since my audition. And Marvel just posted a photo saying go to our website and find out who the next Spider-Man is. I went on the Marvel website on my computer and there it was: The new Spider-Man is Tom Holland. I went ballistic, like absolutely nuts.

This could have been nothing short of exhilarating. So, why would Marvel not tell Holland of the casting. In Hollywood, news travels fast, and Marvel didn’t want the casting news to leak out before they could make the official announcement themselves. It is a weird business practice, but with how rabid comic fans are about leaks and spoilers, could you fault the studio. Who would land the role of Spider-Man was big news in chatrooms, forum, and blogs all over the internet. When a casting like this happens, the news spreads like wildfire.

Sorry Tom, but it just had to be done this way. I am sure the news was nothing short of incredible for him.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
