‘Tron 3’ Hope Still Alive With Director Joseph Kosinski

Tron: Legacy, Disney

Tron Legacy hit theaters a full 30 years after the first film in the franchise. If it wasn’t for an avid cult fan-following, a sequel never would’ve happened.

Although Legacy pulled in $400 million worldwide, it wasn’t enough to warrant a sequel with a $170 million budget. A third film talk circulated the rumor mills, but an actual film never came to fruition.

Recently, while doing press rounds for Top Gun: Maverick, director Joseph Kosinski stirred the pot on sequel talks for Tron. In an interview with ComicBook.com Kosinski said that people and the studio still want a sequel

“There’s always been an interest since Legacy [for a sequel]. There’s always been talk and murmuring of doing another and continuing the story.

I was in China a few years ago and saw them building the TRON ride in Shanghai, which, apparently, is pretty amazing, I would love to experience that at some point.

I think it’s still a nice jewel in the crown of Disney IP and I think there are fans and people petitioning and pushing to continue it inside the halls of Disney. So I think it could happen.

Like anything, it just needs the right confluence of… it’s all about timing and the right elements and everything’s got to come together for a movie to happen.

I think it’s possible and I think it’s worthy of it. I think there’s enough ideas in the franchise, and the fact that it is so unique and nothing else looks or sounds like it, that TRON story.

There is, I think, a future for the franchise and I hope they keep making them.”

Tron Legacy was a great sequel, but the franchise had little to no interest by newer generations. The core fans loved every minute of the new film. A third film looked to bring the programs into the new world.

Legacy starred Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, and Olivia Wilde. In the film Sam Flynn seeks out to find his estranged father who disappeared decades before. He find him in the most-unexpected place.
